Emerging Technology 2/Virtual School and Video Conferencing For Students With Special Needs
Since seat time is so important to a students success and absenteeism is at an all time high, schools are starting to use virtual school and video conferencing as means to bridge the gap between the student and the classroom. Students miss excessive days due to illness, various therapies and treatments, or disruptive behaviors that impede the learning process. Virtual school allows the student the opportunity to receive the lesson that he/she would normally miss. Video conferencing allows students with special needs to conduct important IEP meetings or therapy sessions while allowing all parties to participate. Virtual school and video conferencing are good alternatives to expulsions as well. There will be a time when students will not have to leave the house to attend school. Learning can happen anywhere!

I think you have a point...eventually almost everything will be done online! Although, I must say that I for one would (will) miss the personal interaction. This is a great way to use technology. I have been having a big issue with absenteeism lately. This would help a lot of students to catch up. I have also had a few suspended. This could help them too. Nice layout on your blog too by the way!
ReplyDeleteI do wonder how "active" students need to be for online classes, say in high school. I would love to see something on how it works & the expectations for students. I do enjoy knowing my students and having that impersonal video or video conference seems like I would lose that. It does seem like a good alternative, though, when looking at students who cannot be in a traditional school setting for whatever the reason. Lorie Pietz
